A server to work remotely on your company software

One shared Windows machine, always on: each person opens an RDP session from home and finds their files exactly where they left them.

Starting at €13/mo

Introduction

A server for remote work is a shared Windows machine, always on in a datacenter, that every colleague opens over RDP from home. The company software is installed once, the files stay on the server instead of travelling on personal laptops, and the session comes back in the state it was left in. At By-Hoster the configuration that matches this use is Windows - Plus at €13/month incl. VAT: 8 vCores, 16 GB of RAM, 200 GB of SSD.

The question to settle before any other: how many people at the same time? Windows Server allows 2 concurrent administrative RDP sessions, not one more. For two people, there is nothing else to buy. For a team of 3, 5 or 10 people connected at the same time, Microsoft requires RDS CAL licences that you buy yourself: we neither supply nor resell them. The detail is in our guide to Windows Server licensing.

The rest fits in one sentence: we deliver the machine, not your working environment. The Microsoft licence is not supplied, your business-software licences stay yours, and installation and application configuration are down to you or your IT provider. What we stand behind: the operating system, the network, RDP access, snapshots and human 24/7 support. The server runs in our single DC-FR_NA(01) datacenter in Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

What you get, and what to budget on top

2 concurrent RDP sessions, then RDS CALs

The Microsoft rule, stated without detours: Windows Server allows 2 administrative RDP sessions at once. Up to two people connected together, there is nothing else to buy. Beyond that you need Microsoft RDS CAL licences, at your expense: we neither supply nor resell them.

16 GB of RAM on the Plus plan

Windows - Plus at €13/month: 8 vCores, 16 GB of RAM, 200 GB of SSD, 500 Mbps. It is the most popular configuration. Our published rule of thumb: 4 GB for light single-user use, 8 GB as soon as business software or several concurrent users are involved.

Files stay on the server

Everyone works inside a remote session: documents live on the machine, not on personal laptops, and there is nothing to resynchronise at night. What the session allows — clipboard, drive redirection, local printing — depends on the Windows configuration you apply, with full administrator access.

NVMe, dedicated IPv4, Anti-DDoS, snapshots

NVMe storage, a dedicated IPv4 address, Anti-DDoS protection, snapshots, a fallback VNC console and self-service reinstall from the client area, included on all four configurations. RDP access tuned up to 60 FPS, no commitment, 48-hour money-back guarantee, human 24/7 support by ticket, Discord and phone.

What a remote work server is for

Company software from home

The business application is installed on the server, not on every workstation. The employee opens an RDP session from a personal PC and finds exactly the office tool, with nothing to install at home.

A team of two, no extra licence

The 2 administrative RDP sessions cover two people connected at the same time, or you plus an integrator stepping in while you work. Above two concurrent users, plan for RDS CALs and the matching RAM.

Pick the session back up as you left it

The machine stays powered on: an import started in the evening keeps running, the open windows are still there in the morning. You disconnect instead of shutting down and resume from another computer.

Stop copying folders onto laptops

No more version of the file on a USB stick, another one in a mailbox and a third on the home computer. Documents stay in one place and everyone works on the same copy.

Office, home, second location

The same Windows desktop from the branch, from home or from a second site, on a dedicated IPv4 address. Nothing to reinstall on each workstation, nothing to reconfigure when someone changes computer.

Grow without buying hardware

Start on Windows - Plus at €13/month and move up to Max (32 GB) or Titan (64 GB) as the team grows. No commitment, and annual billing takes 10% off the price.

Frequently asked questions

This is the first thing to know, and it does not depend on us: Windows Server allows 2 concurrent administrative RDP sessions. Two people connected together works with nothing added. From the third simultaneous session onwards, Microsoft requires RDS CAL licences that you buy yourself: we neither supply nor resell them. Nothing stops ten colleagues from taking turns on the machine, as long as they are not connected at the same time.

An RDS CAL is a Microsoft client access licence, required to open application RDP access beyond the 2 administrative sessions. You buy it from Microsoft or from a licence reseller and it remains the customer's responsibility: By-Hoster is not a licence reseller and supplies none. Our guide to Windows Server licensing spells out what the price of a Windows VPS covers here, and what it does not cover.

Four configurations, monthly prices incl. VAT: Core at €8 (4 vCores, 8 GB, 50 GB SSD), Plus at €13 (8 vCores, 16 GB, 200 GB), Max at €26 (16 vCores, 32 GB, 500 GB) and Titan at €49.99 (24 vCores, 64 GB, 800 GB, 1000 Mbps). Annual billing takes 10% off. That price covers the machine, the infrastructure and support; it does not include the Microsoft licence, RDS CALs, SQL Server or your business-software licences.

Our published rule of thumb is 4 GB of RAM for light use — RDP and office work, a single user — and 8 GB as soon as you add business software, SQL Server Express or several concurrent users. Remote work almost always falls into the second case: we recommend Windows - Plus at €13/month and its 16 GB, since every open session takes its share. If the team grows and RDS CALs come into play, aim at Max (32 GB, €26/month).

No. Choosing the system at checkout costs nothing extra — Windows Server 2025, Windows Server 2022 or Windows 11, at no surcharge — and we install it for you, but the Microsoft licence remains your responsibility: By-Hoster neither supplies nor resells licences. The same applies to RDS CALs, to SQL Server beyond Express and to every business application you run. We would rather write it here than let you discover it after ordering.

Yes: you receive a complete Windows machine with administrator access and you install whatever the team needs, exactly as on a physical server. Two caveats: your business-software licences stay yours (Sage, EBP, Cegid, Ciel, payroll), and installation and application configuration are not handled by us. We deliver a bare operating system; By-Hoster support covers the machine, not your application.

That is the very point of remote work over RDP: documents live on the server and only the screen travels to the employee's workstation. No more copy on a USB stick, no more different version in a mailbox, nothing to resynchronise at night. What the session allows — clipboard, drive redirection, local printing — depends on the Windows configuration you apply, and full administrator access leaves you in control of it.

Not necessarily: your server comes with a dedicated IPv4 address and RDP access works directly, with Anti-DDoS protection and a fallback VNC console if the server network ends up misconfigured. Some companies prefer to set up a VPN on the machine rather than expose RDP: that is possible with full administrator access, but it is a configuration you put in place, not a service we install or maintain.

No, and this matters: Windows 11 is a client operating system, not designed to host a multi-user service. It makes sense for a personal remote workstation, not for a team. For shared remote work, choose Windows Server 2025 (mainstream support until 13 November 2029, security until 14 November 2034) or Windows Server 2022 (mainstream until 13 October 2026, security until 14 October 2031). Windows Server 2019 can no longer be installed here.

You order, the server is delivered in 10 minutes with its dedicated IPv4 address and Administrator credentials, and you connect over RDP. From there, you or your IT provider install the software, create the user accounts and move the data: we do not handle the migration. Trigger a snapshot from the client area before every sensitive step. To be clear: only snapshots are included, there is no automatic off-site backup.
