Introduction
Matomo installed, updated and backed up by us, on a machine in France. You install nothing and configure no server: the application is online a few minutes after you order, under your own name.
The plan that suits it is App Confort at €8.99/month incl. VAT — 4 GB of memory. What weighs in Matomo is not the collection, which comes down to one row written per visit, but the archiving: every night the application aggregates the raw logs into pre-computed reports, segment by segment. The more segments you define, the more memory that work needs. 1 GB is enough for a quiet site; the 4 GB stop a nightly archiving run from finishing at midday.
If you are leaving Google Analytics, the official import plugin replays your property's history into a Matomo site — visits, sources, pages, year by year. You can also feed Matomo with no script at all, by importing your web server's access logs or through the HTTP tracking API, which is how email opens and file downloads get counted.
What Matomo does
Whole data, not a poll
Matomo keeps the visits log, not only averages: you can reopen the path of one given visitor. There is no sampling above a certain volume, and therefore no unexplained gap between two reports.
A configuration exempt from consent
The French data protection authority published a Matomo configuration considered strictly necessary: an identifier not reused across sites, a truncated IP address, limited retention. Within that frame, the consent banner is not required.
Google Analytics history import
The official plugin replays your Analytics property's data into Matomo. You can also import the web server's access logs, which reconstructs traffic even for pages that never carried a tag.
The tag manager is included
Matomo Tag Manager is part of the application: containers, triggers, variables, versions. There is no second tool to install in order to place a tag without touching the site's code.

E-commerce tracking counts carts, orders and products viewed without purchase. Reconciliation with the real figure happens on the same data, not on a sample.

Yes, through the official import plugin: it replays your Analytics property's data into a Matomo site, in batches, over the period you ask for. Allow time if the history covers several years. One thing to know: the definitions do not overlap exactly — what Google calls a session and what Matomo calls a visit are not counted the same way, and the totals will never match to the decimal.
It can, in the configuration the French authority published as exempt: analytics strictly necessary to the service, an identifier not reused across sites, a truncated IP address, limited retention, nothing passed to a third party. In exchange, that frame excludes cross-domain tracking and any advertising reuse. If you need those, the banner becomes mandatory again.

Heatmaps, session recording, funnels and A/B testing are paid plugins sold by the publisher on its own marketplace. We host the application; those licences, if you want them, are bought from Matomo.
App Confort, at €8.99/month incl. VAT. It provides 4 GB of memory where the application asks for 1 GB at minimum: the headroom serves the system, not the decor. You can change plan later without reinstalling.
Yes, they are part of the service. A self-hosted application left un-updated is a security risk, not a saving.
